Sadeness was the first song made public under the Enigma project. On the single it was released as Sadeness (Part I), earning awards in many countries and topping more than 20 charts around the world. The song's title is actually a reference to Marquis de Sade who wrote many philosophical works exploring sexuality and complete freedom, with personal pleasure regarded as the most important principle. He spent over three decades in prison and at an insane asylum. Some countries opted to simply use the title Sadness, though Sade is mentioned in the lyrics.

This song founded Enigma's reputation of mixing sensuality with religion, emphasized by the Gregorian chants blended into the track. The other singles released from MCMXC a.D. did much to strengthen this feel, also adding mystery and subtleness that would become trademarks of the project. Sadeness has often been remixed and exists in many different versions.
