The Cross of Changes would be the album that firmly established Enigma with the mainstream music audience around the world. The smash hit Return To Innocence was absorbed by millions of listeners, and more people opened their eyes and ears for Cretu's stunning project. The music still dealt with what some people perceive as touchy issues, this time with slight touch eastern inspiration added to the formula used on MCMXC a.D.. It was clear that we would hear much more of Michael Cretu's mysterious music project in the future.
Before this album was released, Cretu was asked to compose the music for the feature film Sliver, starring Sharon Stone. While Cretu turned down the project due to schedule constraints, he did submit a couple of songs for the film. One of them is Age of Loneliness (Carly's Song), and it's featured on The Cross of Changes. A nice detail is that the song's style stays true not only to the film's theme, but also the theme of the album.
